Student's Union members from my experience do not exist for students at all. I notified various depts from various parts of the country over an ongoing campaign to change
the University complaints system into something decent. ie something n o t run by the old boy/girl network. The students union dont want to know. Student Union reps from Bournemouth University sat in my complaints hearing and did nothing to stop dishonest members of staff from fixing my hearings. Even worse, one member of the 'independent' panel was, yes, president of the students union and he voted with the staff! Since then I have tried to get this system changed as Universities are free to do this to their students time over. there is no protection from the OIA or through the legal system. There is certainly no assistance or support from the student's union who are fully aware of what this system is doing to students. You can see evidence at www.podulantpeople.co.uk about what is happening under this system and what the SU, government, OIA and legal system is turning a blind eye to.

Ah yes, that well-known pedantic point "the truth". If someone always points it out, perhaps you should start respecting it? :P

El Fat: I'm ten years out of date but back when I was a student that deal was close to collapse.

Sandy: You can always guarantee that if you mention Cnut/whatever that someone will always make that pedantic point. The legend is better than the truth: print the legend.

King Knut / Cnut / Canute stood on the shore and attempted to command the tide to not come in, in order to prove to his syncopantic courtiers that he *couldn't* do it, to show that not everything must always obey his every command. Furthermore, he brought decades of peace and stability to England, ended the Dangeld, and was generally considered smart and politically astute.

So perhaps not the metaphor you were looking for.
