The problem with Diplomacy is not that it starts out unbalanced but that the name of the game is to form coalitions with a view to ganging up on opponents. That isn't unrealistic, but it does make for poor gameplay. Admittedly, Italy does often seem to cop it the most, but I have the scars on my back to testify this isn't always the case!

Apart from Railway Rivals, Mystic Wood was another favourite at college. The guy who owned it went to all the trouble of creating an expanded set of cards so that we could play with a much larger group. For some reason, we always listened to Marillion while playing this game.

I also remember an epic game of Diplomacy which we played at the rate of one move per day. The trouble with Diplomacy is that it's unbalanced and fairly predictable. I got Italy, at which point everyone cheerily informed me that I would be annihilated within a very short space of time, and that the game would eventually boil down to a contest between Russia and France. Which is exactly what happened. So why did we bother?

Occasionally, we did some work.
