The Guardian are quite capable of making things up: I got on the wrong end of one one their stories - an inaccurate news story and a reference to it in a leader. Something they could have checked with one phone call, or a hundred yard walk and a simple question. When I confronted the journalist concerned he (apart to from looing quite alarmed, I was of a mind to rip his arms off) said they 'couldn't be expected to check every fact', walked away, got defensive. Funny, doing my NCTJ pre-entry newspaper journalism course I was told that was exactly what would be expected of a rookie reporter. I wanted a retraction and an apology, my then boss said it didn't do to go to war with journalists.

It's quite simple. LDYS is an autonomous organisation and when the Blair-Ashdown joint statement was published I was working for them based in Cowley Street. As such I was one of the few people in the building who was able to put developments up on the party's private internet conferencing system. Ashdown's staff didn't like it and leant, on the chair to shut me up and inquired about the disciplinary procedure. Nice.

So are you going to elaborate on the story of Ashdown's office trying to get you sacked? Did they succeed? Or will we have to wait for "The Graham Diaries" to find out?

Quite - how many times did Kennedy have to dismiss such stories as nonsense? I can't remember any and certainly not after 2001. It really is pretty unlikely that the Guardian just made this up - the stories they ran 1994-9 were largely correct (in generality if not every detail) and then they stopped.

If the Ashdown experience taught us anything (see Ashdown Diaries Vol 2 pgs 1-560) it is that smoke means there is fire somewhere. It's also good information about who the really devious s***s are in the Parly Party - which in fairness didn't appear to include Ming.
